At the beginning of the last century these squares consisted of four carpets of red periwinkles, with splashes of colour being added every spring by the magnificent red-and-white Clusiana tulip. We have replanted this elegant tulip but not the
periwinkles as we want to vary the display every year or even several times a year by planting annuals
As you leave the Belvedere, a small thicket of Chimonanthus praecox accompanies you up the first few steps of the Angel's Staircase, so called because since the 1960s one end of the staircase has been graced by the statue of an angel.
