To avert the threat of developement, the gardens
of the Serre de la Madone - which was created by Lawrence Johnston
between 1926 and 1939 with the help of a staff of 23 gardeners and
masons - has been bought by the Conservatoire du Littoral.
William Waterfiels is playing a leading role in the association
which has taken charge of the garden and, allthough restoration
work is ongoing, it is now open to the public.
The narrower upper terraces are at the exiting point where the
network of paths and steps is just beginning to be opened up,
leading to a series of secret glades filled with flowering trees
The main terrace, which can be seen from the house, has a large
pool with towering pines surrounding it.
